1989 - 81st NATIONAL AEU ASSEMBLY

CHILD CARE AND EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE IN EDUCATION

WHEREAS, A nationwide system of child care and early childhood education is a matter of pressing importance, and federal funding is essential, and

WHEREAS, Many of the proposals currently before Congress designed though they are to accomplish this goal would result in violations of the First Amendment provision separating church and state (e.g., direct grants to religious institutions for repairing and remodeling buildings or other purposes, tuition tax credits, and vouchers), and

WHEREAS, Any law sanctioning such violations would be challenged in the courts, and even if eventually ruled valid its implementation would be long delayed,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

The American Ethical Union urges the United States Government to provide funding for child care and early childhood education, avoiding church-state entanglement, in accord with the provisions of the Constitution.

Adopted by the American Ethical Union Assembly at the New York Society, New York, NY, 1989
